in hawaii. the senate is coming back. the house of representatives meanwhile is going to hold a conference call for all republicans later on today. but it's not clear that all these folks, including the president, are going to have much to do when they do come back to town. there's no deal pending on the table here on the fiscal cliff and we're creeping up here on new year's eve. and then yesterday, as you just mentioned, treasury secretary tim geithner really upped the ante in dramatic stakes in the fiscal cliff end game by saying that the united states is going to hit its borrowing limit on monday. now he said the treasury can put in place some extraordinary measures and it has some wiggle room there but he said that the doubt and uncertainty over the fiscal cliff really clouds the prospect of exactly when the united states is going to hit its debt ceiling, statutory borrowing limit. so, that all adds a whole element of drama to all this. and it's really not clear, guys, at this point, how this thing is going to get resolved. but the house has said that it would like the senate now to go

to hawaii for christmas the president out a new, stripped-down plan to avert the fiscal cliff. here's what it is, extend the bush tax cuts for people making less than $250,000. extend unemployment benefits for the 2 million people who will run out, next month. and, delay the sequester of $110 billion, in spending cuts, next year. for all of the talk of $4 trillion in debt reduction the plan would only save $800 billion, over ten years. senator conrad, is that the best that washington can do over the next nine days, and can you pass even that? >> look, chris. it may come to that but we can do better. and we should do better. this is an opportunity to do something that would be hugely important for the country. and, my own belief is, what we ought to do is take speaker boehner's last offer, the president's last offer, split the difference, and that would be a package of about $2.6 trillion. you couple that with the $1.1 trillion that is already done. and, that would be close to the $4 trillion needed to stabilize the debt and begin to bring it down, and, then, if you want to do add -- add on

be interested to see. he was the pros -- supposed to leave for hawaii for his christmas vacation today. i do not think it would happen. this morning around 10:30 a.m. for the national -- at the national cathedral for the funeral. i did not know what he does next. democrats have been saying all along they were prepared to go over the cliff if they were not presented with a deal they thought was acceptable. i think it is possibly even at this point looks likely to happen. and then they would have to move on what is next. they always believed from a strategic perspective that if they went over the cliff, all of the taxes would expire and any thing the house republicans would pass from then on out would be a tax cut as opposed to a tax increase. this has been a rhetorical proposition that was put out by even senator patty murray as early as last july. the funny thing what is when you heard top republican talkers and leadership discussing the vote that was supposed to be happening last night that is how they phrased it. not a tax hike but letting rates rise on an income where it was already set t
